Street Artists Hold Protest Performance

A crew of street and graffiti artists, together with a handful of war veterans, gathered Monday night in the dark, empty parking lot of MOCA's Geffen Contemporary in Little Tokyo to stage a guerrilla protest performance against the museum's director, Jeffrey Deitch. Cloaked in knit caps and heavy wool scarves in the cold night air, the 20 or so self-described art activists huddled near the museum's expansive north wall, projecting laser graffiti out of the back seat of a silver VW Passat with a laptop perched precariously on the roof of the car. The Best Visual Arts for 2011

It's perhaps surprising that I should single out Tracey Emin's upcoming solo show as one I'm particularly looking forward to. I slagged off her Bed (above) in the 1999 Turner prize show – the artist even blamed me for her not winning the prize. I was horrified by her Venice Biennale British Pavilion in 2007, which included an ill-advised collection of paintings. She stopped speaking to me. But when I slated a slightly tipsy performance she once gave, the artist wrote to tell me my review should have appeared in the obituaries section. She's a trouper. (Gaurdian, January 3, 2010)

Impulsive Pieces

I sit at a big wooden table and piece together fragments of the world around me. My goal is to pause a moment in time just long enough for examination. As today’s world edges closer to chaos, and we are inundated with imagery and information, the centuries-old art form of collage is more relevant than ever. It can freeze the madness, and shuffle its meaning. I entered the arena of mixed media accidentally, and quickly realized that I was onto something. The combination of knife, paper, and glue, and my urge for expression, yielded surprising results. This medium became an immediate way of channeling and processing the beauty, ugliness, solitude, and desire that I saw swirling past me in my life in New York.
