Director of Palace Bans Contemporary Art from Royal Rooms After Protests
The director of the Palace of Versailles denies he has caved in to the demands of traditionalist protest groups opposed to his contemporary art programme by agreeing to no longer use the chateau’s royal apartments as an exhibition space. Jean-Jacques Aillagon has decided, instead, to mount future shows in other areas of the 17th-century site, following the furore over the current exhibition of works on show there by the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami (until 12 December). Hammer Shows Rarely Seen Paintings by Eva Hesse
This fall the Hammer Museum presents Eva Hesse Spectres 1960, an exhibition of seminal and rarely seen paintings by legendary artist Eva Hesse (1936-1970). Created when Hesse was just 24, this group of nineteen semi-representational oil paintings stands in contrast to her later minimalist structures and sculptural assemblages, yet constitutes a vital link in the progression of her work. While several recent museum exhibitions on Hesse’s work have featured a few of these paintings from 1960, none have considered these works as a group all together. (Art Daily, September 30, 2010)

NY Arts Summer 2010 Editorial Preview
|
I began painting in the streets of my hometown, Toulouse, France, in the early 1990s. My sensual “poupee” characters, painted with brush and acrylic paint as opposed to spray paint, powerfully stood out from the rest of the male-dominated graffiti pieces seen throughout my city. The characters’ sensuality, femininity, and unique style gained recognition and respect, from both females and males in the graffiti world as well as the art world. Soon a global following ensued, and my characters became icons in their own right. My characters connect and communicate something special to viewers. They are seductive yet submissive, commanding but docile, sexual and mysterious.
