The Art Exhibition Where the Pieces Really Do Grow on You
In 1997, when the artist Eduardo Kac commissioned the creation of Alba, a flourescent-green, genetically engineered bunny rabbit, few people realized that they were witnessing the dawn of an entirely new kind of art. Dubbed "bio art", this young field employs technology such as cloning, tissue cultures and genetic engineering to manipulate living materials, dramatising the tensions between science and art and asking powerful questions about the power these technologies confer. Roxy Paine's Steel Sculpture to be Installed in Kansas City Sculpture Park
A 56-foot stainless steel sculpture of a tree by internationally acclaimed artist Roxy Paine will be permanently installed in the Kansas City Sculpture Park at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, beginning in early April. The tree was commissioned by Martin Friedman, Hall Family Foundation consultant for the Museum’s Sculpture Park for 20 years, and was funded by the foundation. Ferment was constructed at Paine’s studio in Treadwell, NY and will be transported to the Museum. (Art Daily, January 18, 2011)

NY Arts Fall 2010 Editorial Preview
|
We cannot see reality for what it is. What we see is something presented to us by others as their version of reality. What I try to portray is certain characteristics of a reality that I encounter in my life, or what I call, the real counterfeit. In my work, the process of molding clay sculptures is not only a reinterpretation of my life, but is more a ritual where I continuously dedicate and focus my efforts and skills on this process, in a desire to re-name, re-characterize, or modify the object which I am molding, at the same time trying not to alter anything noticeable to such objects.
