New MoMA Art Lab App for iPad Features Art-Making Activities and Inspires Creative Play

MoMA Art Lab, The Museum of Modern Art's new app for iPad, features exciting art-making activities and imaginative ways for kids ages seven and up to engage with art and connect with MoMA's collection.
Art Lab, the Museum's first art-making app, is inspired by MoMA Labs, a series of interactive spaces at the Museum in which kids and adults can engage with art through hands-on activities. The Art Lab app offers an open-ended exploration of how simple shapes, lines, and colors can be transformed into works of art, and encourages experimentation and digital play for the whole family.
Activities, inspired by modern and contemporary art from MoMA's collection, feature fun facts about artists. You can cut out shapes with virtual scissors to create a collage inspired by Henri Matisse, shake digital scraps of paper across the screen in homage to Jean (Hans) Arp's chance collages, create a sound composition based on art by Elizabeth Murray, and much more.
Art Lab's drawing pad includes shapes that can be stretched, rotated, and shrunk using zoom and pinch motions; tools to create straight or freeform lines in different widths; and a palette with hundreds of vibrant colors. For extra inspiration, there are lively and challenging suggestions such as creating an entire city using only geometric shapes; drawing for 10 seconds without lifting your finger; making a person or animal using only straight lines; or creating a design using only circles or triangles.
You can save artworks to your gallery within the app and to the iPad's Camera Roll, and you can share them with friends, family, or even with MoMA by e-mail or Twitter. (The sharing function is turned off by default, so parents can choose whether to enable it.)
Using Art Lab at home or at MoMA, children, families, artists, and designers will find inspiration and new ways of connecting with the Museum's collection.
