We are excited to announce program highlights for Experimenta Speak to Me, 5th International Biennial of Media Art running from September 14 to November 17 2012 at RMIT Gallery with exhibitions, projects and events in partnership with ACMI, Federation Square, the Wheeler Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas, NGV, West Space, RMIT Project Space, City Village, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins and in Public Spaces around the City of Melbourne.

Ian Burns, anywhere and here, 2012EXPERIMENTA ANNOUNCES IAN BURNS COMMISSION

 

As part of Experimenta Speak to Me, Experimenta has commissioned six new works by Australian and international artist. Experimenta is delighted to announce an exciting new collaboration with New York based Australian artist Ian Burns. A junkyard alchemist, Burns uses found objects and video screens to create large-scale, sculptural installations that draw upon consumer culture. The new work, anywhere and here, has been commissionedin partnership with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). It will be shown as part of Ian Burns: In the Telling, which opens at ACMI on 24 July 2012.

Joe King & Rosie Pedlow, 'Strange Lights', 2010EXPERIMENTA ILLUMINATION THE LIGHT IN WINTER SCREENING PROGRAM AT FEDERATION SQUARE

    

Curated exclusively for Federation Square's 'The Light in Winter' Festival, Experimenta presents a short programme of screen based works by Australian and international artists screening on Federation Square's Big Screen throughout June 2012. Experimenta Illumination includes artists Timothy Casten (Australia), Joe King & Rosie Pedlow (UK), Bruce Mowson (Australia), Nicolas Provost (Belgium) and Sandra Selig (Australia). Together these artworks explore curious moments of life and light. King and Pedlow revisit the sighting of 'unexplained lights' in Rendlesham Forest thirty years on; Provost's hypnotically recomposed aerial shots of the Las Vegas skyline reveal its beauty and madness; Selig reflects quietly on the night time; Casten explores the ambiguity of gesture and familiarity on screen; and Mowson films a woman as she experiences Melbourne in a new light.  

 

Experimenta Illumination will screen twice daily for the duration of 'The Light in Winter' Festival 1 June - 1 July 2012. This week This Mon - Thurs (18 - 21 June) 5.30-6.05pm & 6.05-6.40pm. Check the Federation Square Big Screen schedule for further details.

ADELAIDE: ANAT AND CARBON ARTS CALL FOR NEW WORKS   

The Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT) and Carbon Arts invite Australian artists and artist-led teams to submit proposals for iconic data-generated public artworks that engage with environmental and behavioural issues in evocative, unexpected and playful ways. One proposal for each of the sites in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney will be selected for development and production. Selected artists / teams will participate in an intensive creative development lab led by world-leaders in data-driven arts practice taking place in Sydney from 29th October - 2nd November 2012.

BRISBANE: QUT CREATIVE INDUSTRIES OPEN CALL   

QUT Creative Industries Precinct is excited to announce the launch of the Digital Associates Program, an opportunity for independent new media/digital artists and curators to develop and exhibit their work. The program provides successful applicants with subsidised access to a unique exhibition space and curatorial and technical support to facilitate the display of creative digital and new media practice. The program is designed to coincide with grant and funding initiatives offered by organisations such as Australia Council for the Arts. Applications to exhibit in 2013 are now open.

MELBOURNE:  COLLIDING IDEAS: ART, SOCIETY AND PHYSICS

Recent discoveries in physics have changed our lives forever. From iPhones and the internet to medical imaging and genetic engineering, modern technology has largely been developed through advances in physics, yet few people understand it. Melbourne is hosting the 36th International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP2012), where they may announce the discovery of the Higgs boson, or 'God Particle'. Taking inspiration from this event, the 'Colliding Ideas' symposium will address the social and creative parameters of such events. Public symposium, Sunday 8 July 2012 at RMIT University Storey Hall, 12pm to 5pm.

MELBOURNE:  MEDIA LAB MELBOURNE AND GERTRUDE STREET PROJECTION FESTIVAL SPRINT

Media Lab Melbourne will be running its fourth Sprint as part of the Gertrude Street Projection FestivalWorking out of Seventh Gallery at 155 Gertrude St, they will be re-imagining the possibilities of projections and screens during the Antiscreen Sprint. This event will explore alternate methods of projecting light. They are interested in understanding and exploring the cultural effects of technology and will be breaking down the familiar and reconstructing it into a new form. Media Lab Melbourne will be leading an intensive nine day workshop on unconventional, novel and subverted light imagery techniques. BULGARIA: CALL FOR VIDEO WORKS  

VIDEOHOLICA Video Art Festival in Varna, Bulgaria is accepting now video art submissions for its 5th anniversary edition.The 5th VIDEOHOLICA is planned to take place between 25th and 30th July 2012 in Varna within the framework of the International Biennial for Visual Arts AUGUST IN ART. The theme of VIDEOHOLICA 2012 is free.

NEW YORK: CALL FOR VIDEO WORKS  

The AC Institute, a non-profit gallery in Chelsea, NY, is now accepting submissions for Flat Out, our rotating video project for emerging and experimental artists from around the globe. Videos will be featured for two or three week exhibitions on an LCD screen mounted at the entrance to the gallery. Any subject or theme is welcome.
