"We will sing to the infinity of the present and
abandon the illusion of a future." *
eva International
is pleased to present the opening of After the
Future curated by Annie Fletcher. Founded in 1977 this
year's eva International will open throughout Limerick City on Friday 18
May for its 35th iteration. This three month project consists of
multiple exhibitions, events, and performance platforms which bring
together a series of artists, organizers, and institutions from throughout
Ireland and beyond.
After the Future takes as its point
of departure media theorist and activist Franco "Bifo" Berardi's important
proposal that we refuse current economic dictats and obsession with
the future. Instead we should explore how artistic practice evokes the
complexity of the present and considers the conditions in which we find
ourselves. This project develops new commissions from a broad range of
Irish and international artists, but also vitally rejoices in the
possibility of re-reading the archive of artists' practice from the recent
past. For eva International this is realised through the remaking of
Luc Deleu's "Construction X" (originally exhibited in ev+a
1994) but also through the inclusion of internationally resonant works
by artists such as KwieKulik, Marcel Broodthaers, and Sanja
Ivekovic, all originally conceived in previous decades but continuing
to pose questions more present and urgent than ever.
