DENVER (AP).- Paris. New York. Denver? The Mile High City is not what most people think about when it comes to high fashion. But come Sunday, the Denver Art Museum hosts the only U.S. showing of "Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective," a sweeping look at 40 years of design from the late influential French designer best known for his tuxedo suit for women, Le Smoking. Why Denver? Museum director Christoph Heinrich was the first to ask for it after seeing the exhibit, which originated in Paris in 2010. "The fabulous thing about this country is you have major events everywhere, all over the country," said Heinrich, who is from Germany. "It's not only everything happening in New York and Los Angeles." And what would Saint Laurent, who died in 2008 at age 71 (and never visited Denver), think? ... More

LOS ANGELES, CA.- David Kordansky Gallery announces its second exhibition of new work by Elad Lassry. The show reflects an expansive sense of the picture as an ontological category, one in which a viewer's customary associations with familiar forms are exposed to physical and perceptual paradoxes. Lassry has increasingly looked to diverse media––including drawing, sculpture, and performance––to test current possibilities for engagement with pictures. In each case, the ability to recognize a given subject presents itself as a faculty on the verge of failure, a dissonant constellation of formal characteristics and competing cultural histories. By incorporating objects and immersive situations into his practice, Lassry blurs the boundary between the tangible and cognitive experiences of a picture. As such, his work is indicative of the way in which the virtual defines contemporary ... More

LONDON.- From Sermons in Stones to Monsters of Modernity. Early French Photography and the Church brings together two of the greatest achievements of Western civilisation: Gothic architecture and the invention of photography. The exhibition title references the religious significance of the portal programmes of Gothic cathedrals with their multiple biblical scenes as well as the gargoyles of Notre Dame that were the mid-nineteenth century invention of Violle-le-Duc. The exhibition traces the ways in which the great Gothic churches and cathedrals of France were placed at the heart of their work by the most important French photographers of the 1840s and 1850s. The artists presented will include Edouard Baldus, Edmond Bacot, Hippolyte Bayard, Bisson Frères, Gustave Le Gray, Ange Mailand, Pierre Manguin, Charles Nègre, Emile Pecarrere (Em. Fifth individual exhibition by Marcelo Silveira at Nara Roesler Gallery in Sao Paulo   Seventeen works by Banksy, including image of Kate Moss, to sell in Urban Art Sale at Bonhams   New participants from the U.S. and Europe join the second edition of the AADLA Spring Show in New York

Marcelo Silveira presents four pieces that take over different spaces of the gallery.

SAO PAULO.- Nara Roesler Gallery presents Marcelo Silveira’s show Chronos, which opened on March 22nd. It is the fifth individual exhibition by this Pernambuco-born artist at the gallery, where he also exhibited Arquitetura de Interiores, in 2008. Marcelo Silveira presents four pieces that take over different spaces of the gallery and mix several techniques and materials. “His work, full of constructions that move physically, is mainly characterized by bringing about constant displacement of meanings. Once more, the means used and the suggested nexuses blend together in the works presented in this show, which offers the visitor the experience of building new relations based on the contact with the artist’s pieces”, explains Moacir dos Anjos – who was the curator of the last São Paulo International Biennial – in his critical text about the exhibition. In his nearly 30-year career, Silveira h ... More

Valencian Institute for Modern Art presents exhibition of paintings by Ana Peters   Klunk & Millan develops mobile app for Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley   Eichholz Foundation endows Curator of Modern and Contemporary art at the Portland Art Museum

"In London we often visited the National Gallery. We saw many exhibitions, many paintings. One artist who caught her attention was Hodgkins."

By: Tomàs Llorens

VALENCIA.- When I first met her in Valencia, in 1962, it was three years since Ana had graduated at the San Fernando School. She used go to out occasionally to do landscapes with two painter friends, Antonia and Julia Mir, but she worked mostly in the studio that she had set up at her home in Paterna. I remember that she spent months painting a rather large canvas, a picture that began as a blue still life and slowly evolved towards an increasingly crystalline abstraction. It remained unfinished. She also experimented with abstract collages which combined Tàpies’s tactile quality with Rueda’s compositional clarity. And with small oil paintings, on thick paper or card, very much like others that she did considerably later, in these last few years. I think none of them remain. We married in Bremen at the beginning of 1964, and on the way ... More

Area 51: Myth or Reality will take the visitor into the story and challenge them to decide what is real and what isn’t.

LAS VEGAS, NV.- The National Atomic Testing Museum currently has the first ever exhibit on Area 51 on display. This unique exhibit titled Area 51: Myth or Reality explores the cultural perceptions and historical records of the most secret place in America. The exhibit will be run for 18-months. Area 51 has long been a place of mystery, spawning speculation about secret weapons, technology that verges on science fiction and sightings of unusual unidentified aircraft. Movies have taken the Area 51 myth and fleshed it out with underground bases and aliens. The Nation’s newest national museum, the National Atomic Testing Museum, has meshed these two areas into a very real look at Area 51, based on true stories from those who worked there as well as those who have spent years studying and exploring extraterrestrial sightings and UFOs. The Grateful Dead "Dawn of the Dead" documentary to be released on DVD May 22
OAKS, PA.- In the mid-1960s a new twist on contemporary rock music emerged out of San Francisco. Known as 'psychedelia', it was pioneered by a close-knit community of local bands who merged traditional American forms such as folk, country, blues and rock & roll with new sounds often developed under the influence of psychedelic drugs. Bound up with the social and cultural changes for which San Francisco was also the focal point, it was a combination that made for a radical re-imaging of youth culture. This film traces the movements, events and sounds of those heady days, and traces the story of the definitive band of the psychedelic age, The Grateful Dead. Giving time too for the involvement of Frisco's other lead players such as Big Brother & The Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, The Charlatans and Quicksilver Messenger Service, the program explores ... Josephine King's relationship with men is focus of new exhibition at Riflemaker
LONDON.- The subject of Josephine King's upcoming exhibition at Riflemaker is the artist’s relationships with men (see exhibition title). King (b. 1965, London) makes ink paintings on paper; self-portraits which document her battle with life. Her acclaimed debut exhibition ‘Life So Far’, explored the trauma of the artist’s extreme bi-polar mania. The series later led to a nomination in the category for Best Visual Artist at the South Bank Show Awards. In this new exhibition, Riflemaker will present thirty of King’s new ink paintings made during the past two years. The sensuous full-length portraits and the sardonic, disarmingly honest texts which frame them, document personal relationships, her devotion to her work and the isolation of her illness. “In painting Modern Woman, I am looking outside of myself rather than just looking within. Showing myself naked in both mind and body depicts how ... More

New work by Matt Calderwood in new exhibition at David Risley Gallery
COPENHAGEN.- David Risley Gallery announces an exhibition of new work by Matt Calderwood. The exhibition presents a single monolithic concrete sculpture made up of six identical, individually hand-cast concrete components, assembled in situ. This work stands around 2.5 metres tall and weigh 1 and a half tons. Previous sculptures by Calderwood relied on an added element (water barrels, sandbags) for stability. This balancing act, combined with cheap, everyday materials such as plaster-board, made overt reference to impermanence and fragility. The new sculpture in "Concrete" supports itself — it is a self-sufficient closed-loop system, held in equilibrium but with clear paths of contradicting and counterbalancing forces within. Each of the 6 elements needs to play its role to make the sculpture possible. They are mutually dependent on each other to make a united ... More

Abu Dhabi seeks bidders for Louvre branch
DUBAI (AP).- The developer of a branch of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi has launched its search for a contractor to build the museum following a series of delays. The state-owned Tourism Development and Investment Company placed an ad in local newspapers Sunday seeking bidders to carry out the main construction work on the arm of the French art institution. The Louvre is the first of several high-profile projects, including a branch of the Guggenheim, planned for the Emirati capital's multibillion dollar Saadiyat Island development. Its future was called into question when TDIC scrapped a major construction contract in October. The company said in January it now aims to open the Louvre branch in 2015, years later than previously planned. ... More
