PHILADELPHIA (AP).- The Academy of Natural Sciences has never been one to brag. Its 225,000 annual visitors may associate the nation's oldest natural history museum solely with dioramas and dinosaurs, but behind the scenes there is groundbreaking research conducted by world-renowned scientists and an enviable collection of some 18 million specimens representing all manner of animal, vegetable and mineral. In celebration of its bicentennial this year, the museum has finally decided that it's OK to boast a little. For what's believed to be the first time in 200 years, curators will bring the public into the labyrinthine museum's normally off-limits nooks and crannies for daily tours. "This is a rare opportunity to get a firsthand look at some of the most stunning, and ... More |

The Appomattox museum is the first in a regional system planned by the Museum of the Confederacy to make its vast collection of Confederate artifacts and manuscripts more accessible. Only about 10 percent of its holdings are on display at any one time at the Richmond museum, located next to the former Confederate White House. The ... More |

THE HAGUE.- The Art & Project gallery was a dream come true. Always at the cutting edge, it was a place to meet and to discover new things. Reputations were made there. For decades, the gallery was a centre of attention, first in Amsterdam and later in a historic building in Slootdorp. In the nurturing hands of pioneering founder-owners Adriaan van Ravesteijn (b. 1938) and Geert van Beijeren (1933-2005), it grew to become one of the most important contemporary art galleries anywhere in Europe. Their close, on-going relationships with artists enabled them to acquire a multitude of artworks. The result was a collection of 850 works that they christened Depot VBVR. This is now being split up, with different parts being donated to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, while the Art & Project archives are being preserved by the Netherl ... An illustrated catalog with an essay by Lilly Wei is being published in conjunction with both shows. Copies are available to the press on request. The title of this show refers to the centralized forms, which are the subject of her paintings; wrapped objects at the same time very anthropomorphic that are both inviting and slightly sinister. Her vocabulary of form is distinctive and grows out of organic surrealism. The push and pull between attraction and repulsion in Bucks forms Wei suggests is about decay, about past present and future states, a comic book Pop Surreal version of the theme of vanitas.
