Since it was initiated in 2004, the 5th SeMA
Blue has been regarded as a local arena for introducing young and
emerging artists, and a moment of reflection on the contemporary art scene
which takes place every two years. Based on the continual frame of the
exhibition, SeMA Blue 2012: 12 Events for 12 Rooms, this year, was
particularly made to index the future of Korean contemporary art.
Inviting young artists working worldwide, the exhibition features the
contemporary artistic actions and experiences that have been continued and
created by participants. This is about offering them each a space to
express their thoughts and current activities, which consequently put all
on an artistic flow. At the same time, the museum expects to create an
opportunity for making a communicative passage between audience and
artist.
The structure of the exhibition, involving twelve
artists in twelve separate rooms across two floors of the gallery, forms
one large narrative during the actions of other narratives within the whole
frame, just like a story within a story. Comprising various media such as
painting, sculpture, video, photography, installation, electronic-light,
sound, and cyborg show, the twelve narratives reflected on the twelve rooms
are about what the participants are concentrating on in the present time.
As if twelve independent stories are gathered to complete an undecided
plot, twelve artistic events held in twelve rooms eventually project an
artistic topography of Korean contemporary art.
This open-ended
setting of the exhibition invites everyone to explore, discuss, understand,
and suggest the various possibilities of Korean contemporary art across
boundaries.
