KEITH HARING CATALOGUE NOW AVAILABLE

ACCA is proud to present Caterpillars & Computers: Keith Haring in Australia. Now available at the ACCA Book Shop.

"Keith Haring’s visit to Australia, from 18 February to 8 March 1984, is still regarded with surprise. That an international art superstar should make it to our shores during his meteoric rise to fame — let alone undertake a series of public works here — is amazing. Haring was already a celebrated artist of the 1980s’ New York art scene by the time John Buckley, inaugural director of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), invited him to travel to Melbourne to undertake a series of public projects for ACCA and to speak with art media, including Ashley Crawford of Tension magazine and Paul Taylor of Art & Text magazine…" Juliana Engberg

Edited by ACCA's Associate Curator Hannah Mathews, with contributions from Ted Gott, Lisa Sullivan, Jane Rankin-Reid, Juliana Engberg, Lachlan MacDowall, Wendy Bignami, John Buckley, Julia Gruen, Ashley Crawford, Robert Lindsay, Colin Brearley, Robert Buckingham, Chris McAuliffe, Mark Schaller, Polly Borland, Marcos Davidson, Robyn McKenzie, Mario Maccarone

SPECIAL EVENT

Torsten Lauschmann’s
At the heart of everything a row of holes

“The audience was rapt, following the spotlight as it swung, dimmed, to the spot wherever the next projection would begin.  Craning to the far left, we saw footage of mechanical toys, monkeys clapping cymbals, apes swinging on the spot, strolling wooden mice on sticks with trundling legs.  Switching onto the main screen, painting of cherubs playing instruments were overlaid with a clanging industrial soundtrack…..when it was over, the audience didn’t want to leave.”  Sean Welsh, Glasgow Film Festival

ACCA is thrilled to announce a special presentation of German artist Torsten Lauschmann’s mesmerising At the heart of everything a row of holes on August 3rd 2012.

This special ACCA event, to coincide with the Melbourne Art Fair 2012,  invites you to enter Lauschmann’s immersive, spellbinding world in two very special performances at the National Theatre in St Kilda.

Winner of the inaugural UK Margaret Tait Award for artists working with the moving image, Lauschmann creates a surround-theatre event where carpets fly through the air, pianos play themselves, and mechanical monkeys and mice make great music. The work was first commissioned by Creative Scotland, and comes to Melbourne as a special event to coincide with the Melbourne Art Fair 2012.

At the heart of everything a row of holes simply stunned audiences when first performed at the Glasgow Film Festival last year. The performance involves Lauschmann positioned alongside the audience in the theatre, armed with a hand held projector and series of special visual and sound effects that bounce around the walls, floor and screen.

National Theatre, 20 Carlisle St, St Kilda
Friday 3 August – 4.00pm and 7.00pm

Tickets $12, $8 concession.
School students booked as a group, $5 per student.
Performance lasts approximately 45mins. No intervals.
